Much like a gifted athlete who dominates in three key aspects of his sport, Antonio Reyna, III – an Austin resident with deep roots in South Texas – is a rare triple threat in the fiercely competitive world of art: he excels with oil paints, sculpture, and photography. Aaron Peña, D-Edinburg, featured center, on Friday, December 4, signed up for his party’s nomination for a fifth two-year term for the House District 40 legislative district, which includes most of Edinburg. “It’s official. I filed. My hat’s in the ring,” said Peña. The Edinburg attorney said he decided to highlight an area business – The Boxing Gym, located in the downtown square – while promoting his own candidacy as well. Dolly Elizonda, chair of the Hidalgo County Democratic Party, accepted Peña’s legal papers for his reelection bid at the local business. Diana Delgado graduated from South Texas College with an Associates of Science in Paralegal in May 2008. But it wasn’t her intended career path. “I attended another college and started out in criminal justice, but I made the switch to STC and decided to try something else,” she explained. “I took some classes in office management and got interested in paralegal studies because I really wanted to work in the legal field.” Now she is putting her degree to use as a paralegal assistant for Pharr family law lawyer Damian Orozco. Delgado isn’t finished with higher education. “My dream is to go on and earn my bachelors and then attend law school,” she concluded. “I am looking into the requirements now and look forward to opening up that next chapter in my life.” See story later in this posting.

The Rio Grande Council, Boy Scouts of America, in late November recognized Dr. Shirley Reed, president of South Texas College, and the STC Board of Trustees at its annual dinner. The event celebrated the contributions of the leadership of STC to making the Rio Grande Valley a better place to live and work. Fr. Antonio “T.J.” Martínez, an Eagle Scout and Jesuit priest, was the guest speaker for the occasion. He touched on the importance of service and making a lasting impact on the lives of others. Reed was honored alongside STC Board Chair Mike Allen; Board Vice Chair Gary Gurwitz; and board members Roy De León; Dr. Alejo Salinas Jr., Óscar Longoria Jr., and Jesse Villarreal. “What a tremendous honor to be recognized by such a venerable institution standing for the best attributes of community caring and service,” said Reed. “But this award belongs to the real heroes at STC – our students. They are the ones making the courageous decision to put other obligations aside to secure a higher education, thus a chance at a brighter, more fulfilling future. They are the ones making an impact, changing families and showing others that anything is possible. This award belongs to them.” Under Reed’s and the board of trustees’ leadership, STC has grown to offer more than 100 degree and certificate program options from its five state-of-the-art campuses to more than 27,000 students. Their vision has allowed STC to become a thriving intellectual and community center, hosting art lectures, business luncheons, congressional briefings, scout meetings, visiting authors, and many other events enriching the lives of community members. Many Starr County residents came out to South Texas College’s Starr County Campus on the evening of Thursday, November 19, 2009 for a special event – the swearing in of Rose Benavidez (featured left) to represent the constituents of the county on STC’s Board of Trustees. Surrounded by family, friends and community supporters, Benavidez was sworn in by Starr County Judge Eloy Vera. Business associates and supporters helped mark the occasion by congratulating Benavidez on choosing to serve in public office. “When I drove into Rio Grande City for the event this afternoon and I saw all of the growth, it floored me,” said Bonnie González, chief executive officer of Workforce Solutions. “Every time I see it, it floors me. Top officials with South Texas Health System presented Martínez with the “Community Leader Appreciation Award” in appreciation for his contributions to health care. On the eve of Veterans Day, Texas gubernatorial candidate Tom Schieffer – featured fourth from left – a Democrat from Fort Worth, told South Texans that he "will do everything" he can to persuade the federal government to build a Veterans Affairs Hospital in the Rio Grande Valley. His pledge to work towards bringing a VA Hospital to the Valley came as part of his latest visit to South Texas. Schieffer was in the three-time All-America City for a round of meetings with area political, business, and community leaders before capping off his visit with a fundraiser early Tuesday evening, November 10, at Edwards Abstract and Title Co., located at 3111 W. Freddy González Drive. "Such a facility is long overdue, and I will do everything I can to assure that Washington is listening. Failing to provide proper health care for our veterans makes it more difficult to recruit our next generation of service men and women, and it breaks a sacred trust between our government and those who were willing to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our country," said Schieffer, a former U.S. Ambassador to Australia and Japan. René A. Ramírez of Edinburg on Tuesday, November 3, took the oath of office given to him by his former employer, Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, to become the newest addition to the Hidalgo County family. Ramírez, 40, assumes the role of chief administrator for the sixth largest county in the state after Hidalgo County Judge J.D. Salinas III resigned the judgeship, after nearly three years of dedicated service, for an appointment in the Obama Administration. A packed house in the Hidalgo County Commissioners Courtroom in Edinburg showed up to witness the event, including his wife, Laura Guerra Ramírez, and their two daughters, Gabriela and Mía Carmen. On Thursday, October 29, Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, featured left, convened the first hearing of the Legislative Committee on Aging, which was established to study pertinent issues affecting the state’s aging population. "Our goal is to examine essential services, such as housing, transportation and health care specific to Texas’ aging population and determine how to better address those unmet needs," said Lucio, who was appointed chair of the committee by Lt. The Leadership Edinburg Class XXI has announced plans to hold on fundraiser on Saturday, November 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of its efforts to promote strong leadership skills that focus on politics, education, and quality of life issues. The event, dubbed "El Marcadito Day en Edinburg", helps generate funds for Leadership Class programs through the sale of sponsorships for that gathering. Rep. Armando "Mando" Martínez, D-Weslaco, featured center, welcomes two of the several hundred constituents who showed up to his reelection campaign kick-off in Weslaco on Wednesday, October 21, at the Best Western Palm Aire Motor Inn & Suites. René A. Ramírez, the longtime chief-of-staff for Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, D-McAllen, featured in this recent news portrait with his wife, Laura Guerra Ramírez, on Tuesday, October 27, was appointed by the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court as interim county judge, replacing Hidalgo County Judge J.D. Salinas, III, who resigned earlier that day in order to take a major federal appointment in north Texas. "My task is to carry out the priorities laid out in the budget by Judge Salinas and Commissioners Court, ensure our community sees no interruption in public services, and continue to advocate at the state and federal level for our fair share of investments in order to spur economic development, increased educational opportunities, and greater access to affordable health care," Ramírez pledged. He is scheduled to leave his state post as Hinojosa’s right-hand man in the coming days in order to prepare to take his oath of office as the administrative leader of the county government. Hinojosa spoke highly of Ramírez’ credentials and dedication to South Texas. "René has done an outstanding job working with me and with my legislative team, is well-respected by the legislative leadership in Austin, and has excellent working relations with people from all walks of life in South Texas," said Hinojosa. South Texas College President Shirley A. Reed, featured center, has been named the Pacesetter of the Year by District 4 of the National Council for Public Relations and Marketing. The college’s Office of Public Relations and Marketing also earned 10 District 4 Medallion Awards from NCMPR. The Pacesetter of the Year award recognizes a community college president who has demonstrated special leadership and support in marketing and public relations. “This is really an honor, but it’s pretty easy to be the pacesetter when you have such a great staff,” Reed said at an honorees luncheon during the annual NCMPR District 4 Conference held in mid-October. “This nation is going through some pretty tough times and it’s the community colleges that will play a leading role in helping solve our economic situation. Hundreds filed into the Fine Arts Auditorium on Tuesday, October 20 as The University of Texas-Pan American kicked off its sixth annual Distinguished Speakers Series with Steve Wozniak, featured right, co-founder of Apple Computer, Inc. and chief scientist for Fusion-IO. Wozniak is the first of four distinguished speakers invited to present at UTPA. Former Rep. Roberto Gutiérrez, D-McAllen, featured right, is congratulated by Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, D-McAllen, on Thursday, October 15, for Gutiérrez’ role in 2001 in passing legislation that allows the University of Texas-Pan American to establish the Starr County Upper-Level Center in Rio Grande City. Earlier that day, Gutiérrez, along with other area legislators and city and county officials, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the planned facility. When complete, this structure will provide students in the western Rio Grande Valley with a state-of-the-art educational center. The new building will have approximately 21,000 square feet of computer labs, classrooms, office space, math and science labs, smart or technology-enhanced classrooms and a resource center. The University of Texas System Board of Regents on Monday, October 12, named Dr. Robert S. Nelsen as the sole finalist for the presidency of The University of Texas – Pan American. The board announced Nelsen, currently the associate vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, after considering recommendations of an advisory committee that reviewed nominations and applications for the position. "The search advisory committee worked diligently to find these exceptional candidates, all of whom possess impressive credentials and experience in administration at leading universities," said Regent Janiece Longoria, a Houston lawyer who is formerly from Pharr. "We are confident Dr. Nelsen has the mix of skills that will make him the right fit to push UT Pan American to the next level of excellence.” Under state law, university governing boards must name finalists for a presidency at least 21 days before making an appointment. In a related development, Sergio Muñoz, Jr., D-Palmview, a Democratic state representative candidate for House District 36, has pledged to work closely with Dr. Robert S. Nelson, to protect and promote the legislative interests of one of South Texas’ largest public higher education systems. "I have some big plans in store in the Texas Legislature for UT-Pan American, South Texas College, and Texas A&M," said Muñoz. "The bottom line is that I won’t be satisfied until the Valley has all of the resources, from undergraduate degrees to law and medical degrees, now available to the people who live in Austin and San Antonio." Leaders with the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce have announced that the local organization will be hosting a Winter Texan Welcome and Small Business Expo on Thursday, November 5. The local chamber recognizes that Winter Texans are vital to the city’s economy. Live music by “It’s Miller Time”, food, door prizes and drinks will be available to Winter Texans for only $3 per tickets, which may be purchased in advance through local RV parks and at the chamber headquarters. Former Rep. Cullen R. Looney, D-Edinburg, a local attorney, and Estella Lane Treviño, a former justice of the peace and longtime executive director of the Edinburg Housing Authority, have been named Man and Woman of the Year by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. René Gutiérrez, the new superintendent of the Edinburg school district, featured center, back row, on Thursday, September 24, was the keynote speaker before the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. Gutiérrez, who was selected superintendent by the Edinburg school board in June, addressed current topics being discussed within the school district including, but not limited to, new schools being built. Gutiérrez, a recent immigrant from Mexico and former migrant, attended McAllen schools and graduated from McAllen High School and then attended Texas Southmost College at Brownsville where he received an Associate Degree in Applied Science. He received a Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) from Pan American at Brownsville; a Master of Education Degree from the University of Texas – Pan American; and a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership. His doctoral dissertation is entitled Factors Contributing to the Academic Achievement of Mexican-Origin Immigrant High School Students. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to participate in the 26th Annual Heart of the Valley Health Fair, set for Sunday, November 22, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the McAllen Convention Center. Through this yearly event, area residents are educated about the latest treatments, procedures, services and technology available in the Rio Grande Valley. Exhibitors at the health fair will offer free health screenings in cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, vision/glaucoma, dental, chiropractic and bone density as well as educational information. Chris McGill, featured right, who is president of The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT), and Charley Wilkison, featured left, CLEAT’s public affairs director, on Friday, October 2, presented Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, with the organization’s Visionary Leader Award for his legislative work on behalf of Texas peace officers. The honor was bestowed during that organization’s convention, held in Laredo. The award was part of a ceremonial bill signing by Gov. Rick Perry of Lucio’s Senate Bill 872, which was approved by lawmakers last spring. SB 872 allows survivor families of law enforcement officers who are killed on duty to remain eligible for health insurance and at affordable rates. Rep. Houston Mayor Bill White, featured in this campaign portrait, is bringing his campaign for U.S. Senate to Edinburg on Friday, October 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium at the University of Texas-Pan American. The event is free and open to the public. White, a Democrat, is one of a growing number of candidates seeking to replace U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who is expected to resign her federal post in the coming weeks in order to file for the March 2010 Republican Party primary for governor. Former Texas Comptroller John Sharp, a Democrat, and Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams, a Republican, are among the other high-profile candidates also seeking to succeed Hutchison. No date has been set for the election to replace Hutchison if she leaves her Senate seat later this fall, but Hutchison must decide by January 1, 2010 whether she will file for reelection to the U.S. Senate or file for governor.

South Texas College’s History Department and The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Mexican American Studies have joined forces to produce a landmark symposium, “The Old Valley/New Valley: Analyzing the Past, Present, and Future of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.” The event brings scholars and experts from across the United States and Mexico to talk about Valley history, economics, culture, education, medicine and more. The symposium kicks off with a reception on the evening of Wednesday, November 4, with full days of panel discussions from Thursday, November 5 through Saturday, November 7. The Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) on Wednesday, September 23, launched the Biosecurity and Import Safety Initiative – a collection of service, research and educational activities designed to ensure the health of the Rio Grande Valley, a region at risk of infectious disease, environmental threats and natural disasters. “With the Rio Grande Valley and the Coastal Bend serving as two of the largest ports of entry for people and commerce, we have direct access to the people and data relevant to detecting threats to public health,” said Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen. “The border is the front line for expanding our knowledge base as to specific risks and solutions for identifying, containing and treating the spread of communicable infections and viruses.” To help address complex biosecurity issues along the Texas-Mexico border, the Texas A&M Health Science Center was tasked by the 81st Texas Legislature with developing a Biosecurity and Import Safety Initiative headquartered in McAllen. The initiative is an integrated program that fosters training, education and enhanced environmental laboratory capacities in support of preparedness and increased local public health infrastructure. South Texas College’s History Department and Futuro McAllen, a citizens’ organization dedicated to quality-of-life issues in McAllen, are hosting a forum on Thursday, October 1, at 7 p.m. entitled An Introduction to Rail Mass Transportation in McAllen in the Rainbow Room of the STC’s Pecan Campus Library, located at 3201West Pecan Boulevard. The proposed track starts at McAllen Miller Airport, continuing north through downtown McAllen, then along Bicentennial Boulevard, with stops at half-mile intervals. Each stop forms a unique node of mid-rise developments where people can live, work, and play. These pedestrian-friendly nodes will drive vertical growth in the city, expand the tax base and create new opportunities for business, tourism, urban living, arts, and entertainment. The line extends to Edinburg, stopping at the County Courthouse complex and The University of Texas-Pan American, making it a very different type of commuter school. See story later in this posting.
