FEATURED: Sen. Juan Hinojosa, D-McAllen, with his wife, Amanda Leticia Hinojosa. On Monday, April 4, 2022, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, asked committees of the Texas Senate to study issues during the remainder of 2022 that could affect Texas in general and the Rio Grande Valley in particular. Those topics gain increased visibility and are more likely to be on the policy agenda for the next regular session of the Texas Legislature, which returns to work in early January 2023. The District 20 senator serves on several of the committees which will consider major legislative proposals such as a state hospital for mental health in the Valley and border security.

FEATURED: Billy Calzada, a photojournalist and FAA Part 107 drone pilot with the San Antonio Express-News, was making photographs with a drone on July 24, 2018, of the aftermath of a fatal apartment fire when he was approached by ATF agents and the San Marcos police and told to stop the activity because it was illegal. Lawyers for the National Press Photographers Association sued the state of Texas seeking to overturn the law, and won on Monday, March 28, 2022.
FEATURED: Palmhurst Mayor Ramiro J. Rodríguez, Jr., 68, who had been mayor of that community for more than than 23 years, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. His death was announced by U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo.

Senate Bill 8 provided roughly $13.3 billion from money received by the state from the Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund and the Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund. Both of those funds were established under the federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Senate Bill 8 went into effect on Monday, November 8, 2021.
