Edinburg EDC contribution of almost $435,000 for Memorial/Eisenhower Sports Complex set for action by Edinburg City Council on Tuesday, February 20 - Titans of the Texas Legislature

An offer by the Board of Directors for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation to provide almost $435,000 to help cover the costs of the Memorial/Eisenhower Sports Complex is set for action by the Edinburg City Council on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, when city leaders hold their regular bimonthly meeting, beginning at 6 p.m., at Edinburg City Hall. In another item on the city council’s agenda relating to the Edinburg EDC, the Mayor and City Council are scheduled to appoint a City Secretary following the announcement that longtime City Secretary Myra Ayala Garza has resigned, effective Tuesday, February 13, 2018, to begin working with the Edinburg EDC. On Friday, February 16, 2018, the Edinburg EDC Board of Directors, joined by the Mayor Molina, Mayor Pro Tem David Torres, Councilmember Enríquez, and Councilmember Salinas, participated in a news conference at Edinburg City Hall to announce they had selected Plinio “Joey” Treviño as the Executive Director for the Edinburg EDC. The Edinburg EDC is the jobs-creation arm of Mayor Richard Molina, Mayor Pro-Tem David Torres, Councilmember Homer Jasso, Jr., Councilmember Gilbert Enríquez, and Councilmember Jorge Salinas. The Edinburg EDC Board of Directors is comprised of City Councilmember Gilbert Enríquez as President, Edinburg School Board Trustee Miguel “Mike” Farías as Vice-President, Isael Posadas, P.E., as Secretary/Treasurer, and Julio César Carranza and Noé Sauceda, Ph.D. as Members.

An offer by the Board of Directors for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation to provide almost $435,000 to help cover the costs of the Memorial/Eisenhower Sports Complex is set for action by the Edinburg City Council on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, when city leaders hold their regularly-scheduled meeting, beginning at 6 p.m., at Edinburg City Hall.

In another item on the city government’s agenda relating to the Edinburg EDC, the Mayor and City Council are scheduled to appoint a City Secretary following the announcement that longtime City Secretary Myra Ayala Garza has resigned, effective Tuesday, February 13, 2018, to begin working with the Edinburg EDC.

Trevino has numerous years of experience in economic development, having served as the Executive Director of the Weslaco Economic Development Corporation, and most recently as the South Texas Director of Business Development for Raba Kistner Consultants, according to the city’s public information department.

Trevino also has municipality experience having served as the Director of the Planning and Code Enforcement Division for the City of Weslaco.

Additionally, he served as a City Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem in Harlingen from 2009 to 2012 where he led the negotiations and approval for the Bass Pro Shop Major Retail Development.

He has also served on numerous boards and committees.  He is currently active in the Red Cross South Texas Chapter, Vida, RGV Lead, and the Rio Grande Valley Partnership.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Texas State University and attended the Reynaldo Garza School of Law from 1992 to 1993.

The proposed funding from the Edinburg EDC comes for a vote on Tuesday, February  20 almost two years after the city government and the school district agreed to join forces on behalf of the proposed public park.

“The Edinburg Economic Development Corporation finds that the development of the Memorial/Eisenhower Sports Complex will promote economic development, the hotel industry and increase tourism in the City of Edinburg and improve the quality of life in the community and desires to participate in the city’s commitment of $1,434,175.81 by providing the following funding in the amount of $434,175.81,” Sonia Marroquín, Assistant City Manager, stated in her memorandum to the mayor and city council.

“On February 29, 2016, the Edinburg Independent School District and the City of Edinburg entered into an Interlocal Agreement for the joint use and development of Memorial/Eisenhower Sports Complex,” Marroquín added. “The Sports Complex shall include two softball fields, one baseball field, three soccer fields, three basketball courts, playscape areas, two concession stand/restrooms, parking areas, walking trail, landscaping and irrigation, drainage improvements and all other appurtenances.”

This funding will assist with the costs of the following:

Structures (Basketball courts and restroom) – $231,120;
Northeast Parking Connection (Walking trail and lights) – $27,572,31;
Add Alternate #1 – Parking Lot North (Parking and lights) – $46,108.00;
Add Alternate #2 – Parking Lot South (Parking lot and lights) – $85,675.50;
Add Alternate #4 – Soccer Field (Irrigation and lighting) – $24,300; and
Add Alternate #5 – Football Practice Field (Irrigation and Lighting) – $19,400.

LEADERSHIP EDINBURG CLASS XXIX COMPLETES COMMUNITY SERVICE SESSION

Leadership Edinburg (LE) Class XXIX recently completed a community service session at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Edinburg.

The session offered presentations, discussions, and questions on nine different programs of service and its importance to Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley. This seminar helps members gain knowledge on each organization and help encourage community service action.

Leadership Edinburg leaders offered their thanks to the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department, the Rio Grande Valley Down Syndrome Association, Mujeres Unidas, Valley Initiative for Development and Advancement (VIDA), Capable Kids, Nevaeh’s Kids Conquering Cancer, Sister Norma Pimenta, and Dialogos de Esperanza Online Radio for participating in the session. The officials also extended their appreciation to Holiday Inn Express & Suites – Edinburg for hosting the class session and Taco Palenque Edinburg for sponsoring the dinner.

Leadership Edinburg is designed by the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce to allow class members to interact with one another and members of the community to encourage a better Edinburg. The nine-month program is structured to help class members understand the problems and opportunities we face through strong leadership skills focusing on politics, education, and quality of life.
