The Edinburg school district’s Vision Academy of Excellence, a high school senior recovery school, was recognized earlier this spring by the Texas House of Representatives for helping non-traditional students graduate from high school. The recognition came via Texas House Resolution 770 authored by Rep. Aaron Peña, R-Edinburg. The resolution was introduced during Edinburg Day at the State Capitol. The McAllen Chamber of Commerce scheduled its annual Top 25 Scholarship Banquet for Thursday, May 19, 2011 to honor the top 25 graduates from each of the three McAllen high schools – McHi, Memorial, and Nikki Rowe. The chamber has sponsored this event for the past 26 years to show support of McAllen graduates wishing to continue their education and as a reward for a job well done. The showcase kicked off April 28 with an emphasis on health communication, which is one of the fastest growing academic fields of study within communications. The showcase continued April 29, with a panel of media professionals in public relations and advertising who were invited to exemplify the other side of mass communication careers beyond print and broadcast journalism, which was the focus of last year’s showcase. Administrators from The University of Texas-Pan American praised all of the institution’s staff members Wednesday, April 20 during the 23rd annual Staff Employee Awards Ceremony for continuing their hard work and dedication to UTPA despite looming budget cuts from the state. In this portrait, employees of UTPA’s Budget Office received the Teamwork Excellence Award from UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen. This year, the university honored 177 employees who have completed working at least five years of service at the institution by the end of the 2010 calendar year. Bill Summers (featured center, with his wife, Jo), president and chief executive officer of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, on Wednesday, September 9, was honored by state leaders in Weslaco with the renaming of a key South Texas roadway in recognition of his decades of public service on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border. Summers many contributions to the people of Texas, particularly in helping promote an improved transportation system in South Texas that directly benefits economic development and jobs creation, sparked a new state law that renamed FM 1015 International Boulevard into the Bill Summers International Boulevard. The seven-mile long Bill Summers International Boulevard leads directly to the Progresso International Bridge, “which is fitting, given that Mr. Summers is also well-known for his strong ties to political, business, and community leaders in Mexico,” said Rep. Armando “Mando” Martínez, D-Weslaco. Martínez was the House sponsor of Senate Bill 1997, approved by the Legislature last spring, which authorized the renaming of the roadway. Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, was the lead Senate author of that legislation, along with Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen. “Bill has always been a very effective advocate for South Texas and the border region every time he came to visit us at the Texas Capitol,” said Hinojosa. “Equally impressive, he has the ability to make and keep friendships with people from all walks of life, even when they don’t agree with him. On Thursday, September 24, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee, headed by Ramiro Garza, executive director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, will host a public affairs luncheon featuring René Gutiérrez, the new superintendent of the Edinburg school district. Although the event is open to the pubic, there is a $12 per person fee, or $150 for a table of 10, which includes a hot lunch, beverage and dessert. State Rep. René O. Oliveira, D-Brownsville, featured left, announced his bid for a 14th term in the Texas House of Representatives on Thursday, September 10, citing the need to bring an additional congressional seat to the Rio Grande Valley through redistricting in the 2011 legislative session. Oliveira represents House District 37 which encompasses the majority of Brownsville, Port Isabel, Laguna Vista, Bayview, and a portion of northern Los Fresnos. Launching his campaign for the 2010 March Democratic Primary election, Oliveira, 54, currently chairs the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, and is a member of the House State Affairs Committee which oversees electric and other major utilities. He is the eighth ranking member of 150 members of the Texas House. The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce along with the Edinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the 3rd Annual Community Health Fair & Edinburg on Wheels, Saturday, March 7 from 8 a.m until noon. The event will be held at the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, 602 W. University Drive. The Health Fair is currently accepting participants. South Texas College and The University of Texas-Pan American have developed the Start Here, Finish There Student Transfer Success Action Plan to ensure students have an easier time completing their degrees through a partnership between both higher education institutions. “The plan includes strategies to develop a seamless transition for STC graduates transferring to UTPA,” said Juan E. Projected to be 54,000 square feet in size, the proposed Edinburg Medical Conference Center would represent the latest cutting-edge medical resource for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and for South Texas, according to DHR leader Alonzo Cantú. If plans for the center are successful, Edinburg could increase its chances of landing a proposed University of Texas System medical school, he predicted. "We would have the infrastructure in place, we would have the credibility, plus we would have doctors who are teaching at other hospitals who would see we do have the state-of-the-art equipment and technology," Cantú observed. "So, if a medical school was started, we would be ready to have some of the medical students training here."

Mayor Joe Ochoa, who earlier this year announced he would not be seeking reelection in May, on Tuesday, February 10, was honored by the Texas House of Representatives for leading Edinburg through an unprecedented period of economic development and improvements in the quality-of-life during his 13 years as one of South Texas’ most effective political leaders. The high praise was contained in House Concurrent Resolution 39, authored by Rep. Verónica Gonzáles, D-McAllen, whose House District 41 includes southwest Edinburg. The measure, which was approved unanimously by the 150-member House of Representatives, was publicly endorsed by Rep. Aaron Peña, D-Edinburg, whose House District 40 includes most of the three-time All-America City. Ochoa was credited for heavily influencing the city’s "dramatic growth and prosperity," noting that during his tenure as mayor, Edinburg has seen the number of all properties in Edinburg increase dramatically, from $500 million in assessed valuations when he first took office in 1993, to $3 billion today. Roland Arriola, Ph.D., president of the Texas Valley Communities Foundation, was one of 15 members appointed on Monday, February 16, by the University of Texas System Board of Regents to serve on a presidential search committee to advise regents on the selection of a president for UT-Pan American. Arriola, a former member of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, was selected because of his role as president of the UT-Pan American Alumni Association. The UT System appointed Charles A. Sorber as interim president last month. Sorber assumed the interim presidency on Monday, February 16. The advisory committee will be asked to present the names of no more than 10 candidates – unranked – to the board, which will make the final decision. Lucio paid tribute to the organization’s 2008-2009 King Luis Barrientos and Queen Eva Martínez, featured center, both representing Casa Del Mar in Brownsville. The 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 Royal Courts were also honored and included members from senior centers throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Amigos Del Valle is a consortium of county and city governmental entities working to provide nutrition, transportation and housing services to senior citizens of Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties. Congratulations to Maureen F. McClain, associate director of Disability Services at The University of Texas-Pan American, who was recently appointed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities. McClain was one of five individuals in the state, whose terms will expire February 1, 2010, to be chosen for the committee that works to ensure Texans with disabilities may live their lives with integrity, independence and productivity. That’s why South Texas College is hosting a Cyber Security Workshop on Thursday, February 19 and Friday, February 20 at its Pecan Campus in McAllen. Several South Texas College students had the unique opportunity to meet recently with Texas lawmakers in Austin to share their views about higher education, as well as their hopes for current and future generations of Hidalgo and Starr county students. Karina Cerda, Darien Fernández, Miguel García, Lizette Muñoz, Cassandra Orozco, Ronald Tanamachi and Esther Ybarra, who are members of STC’s Student Government Association, represented the student body at Community College Day at the Texas State Capitol on Wednesday, February 4. Community College Day was sponsored and organized by the Texas Junior College Student Government Association. The students toured the capitol building, attended a rally and had the opportunity to network with students from across the state. The STC students, who were chaperoned by a delegation of STC administrators, met with: Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo; Rep. Ismael "Kino" Flores, D-Palmview; Rep. Verónica Gonzáles; Rep. Ryan Guillen, D-Roma; Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham; Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas; and Rep. Fred Brown, R-Bryan. The meetings allowed students to share their experiences and expectations with lawmakers to help them understand the continually growing role community colleges play in the economic growth and vitality of the districts they serve. The Heart of America Carnival will be featured during that week; with a $5 "All-You-Can-Ride" special on February 26.
