On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, these area leaders participated in the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine’s grand opening of its Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in San Carlos, in Hidalgo County. UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free health care to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs.
