Edinburg’s June 2017 unemployment rate of 5.9 percent is part of a consistent pattern of positive reports, including May 2017 (5.4 percent), April 2017 (5.4 percent), March 2017 (6 percent), February 2017 (6.4 percent) and January 2017 (6.2 percent).
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, for the month of June 2017, these are the employment figures for the seven largest cities in the Valley:

The state’s unemployment rate in June 2017 was 4.7 percent, compared with 5 percent in June 2016.

Edinburg’s annual unemployment rate for 2016 compared favorably with the Valley’s other major cities:
The annual unemployment rate in McAllen for 2016 was 5.4 percent;

ORIENTATION TAKES PLACE IN EDINBURG FOR UTRGV SCHOOL OF MEDICINE’S SECOND COHORT, CLASS OF 2021
Orientation underway for UTRGV School of Medicine’s second cohort, Class of 2021
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 welcomed its newest 50 students this week at its first day of orientation.
The three-week orientation introduced students to all aspects of student life, including academics, wellness and community outreach.
In addition to receiving previews on the classes they will take, students had the option to learn about opportunities in research and promotora training. They also could take part in wellness activities including yoga and meditation.
This cohort includes 16 students from the Rio Grande Valley – 11 from Hidalgo County, three from Cameron County and two from Starr County.
The class of 27 males and 23 females is diverse, with ages ranging from 21 to 41 and a population of 48 percent Hispanic, 24 percent white, 14 percent African American and 12 percent Asian/Indian.
Orientation culminated with the White Coat Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Texas Southmost College Arts Center in Brownsville.
